Slow Start for Caribbean Hotels in 2016

The Caribbean’s hotel sector is off to a slow start so far in 2016, according to new data from STR.

The analytics firm’s latest report showed regional hotel occupancy falling year-over-year in both January and February.

In January, Caribbean hotel occupancy stood at 69.9 percent, down 1.3 percent compared to the first month of 2015.

In February, hotel occupancy was 75.5 percent, down 3.9 percent from February 2016.

That came as average daily rates fell 1.7 percent and 0.8 percent in January and February, respectively, while revenue per available room fell by 3 percent and 4.7 percent in January and February.

STR’s data surveyed 1,933 hotels comprising 235,038 rooms in the wider Caribbean region.
