Santo Domingo is getting a potentially game-changing hotel project.

Hard Rock International has announced plans to develop a new 40-story hotel and casino in the Dominican Republic’s capital.

The property, which will feature 400 hotel rooms and suites and a state-of-the-art casino, is slated to debut in late 2017.

It will be the company’s second Hard Rock hotel in the Dominican Republic, along with the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana.

“The Dominican Republic is the region’s most visited country and continues to be the top performing destination in the Caribbean. In fact, the country received 19% of the record number of 26.3 million visitors to the Caribbean region in 2014,” said Nelson Parker, vice president of casino development, Hard Rock International. “The decision to bring a full service hotel and the brand’s second Caribbean casino to the Dominican Republic is a testament to the country’s remarkable strength in tourism.”

The property will be highlighted by a 23,000-square-foot casino, along with a screening room and a nightclub.

The casino will feature two bars, along with a race and sports book, 400 slot machines and 40 table games.

“We’ve had overwhelming success with our resort in Punta Cana, and are thrilled to continue our collaboration with Hard Rock International and introduce Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Santo Domingo,” said Frank Maduro, vice president of Marketing for All Inclusive Collection. “The vibrant atmosphere of the destination, matched with our luxury offerings and unique amenities, will make for an unforgettable and fun experience for all travelers.”

Other amenities will include 33,000 square feet of meeting space, a cigar lounge, a celebrity chef restsaurant and its signature Rock Spa.

More importantly, it will make Santo Domingo a hotel and all-inclusive destination that it hasn’t ever really been — often lost in the country’s sea of effectively dedicated all-inclusive destinations like Punta Cana and Puerto Plata.

And with the capital’s fascinating Colonial Zone and bustling nightlife, it should make the hotel a must-visit destination — and a new kind of all-inclusive hotel in the heart of a Caribbean city.
