More Concern Over Haiti Election Delay

It’s been more than two months since Haiti held its first round of presidential elections on Oct. 25, and the country still has no president-elect.

Jovenel Moise and Jude Celestin, who got the most votes in the first round of elections, were set for a run-off vote on Dec. 27, but that vote was postponed until further notice.

The United Nations is again voicing its concern over the continued electoral disarray in the country.

“The Secretary-General recalls that Parliament has not functioned since January 2015,” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s spokesperson said. “He underlines the importance of inaugurating the new legislature within the constitutional time frame to ensure the renewal of democratic institutions and consolidate political stability in Haiti.”

Ban is calling for the electoral process to be “concluded as soon as possible in a transparent, inclusive and credible manner.”

This was the second time in two weeks that Ban had expressed his concern over Haiti’s political situation.
