Is there a Caribbean capital of solar?
Right now, it might be the Eastern Caribbean, where more and more countries are implementing solar projects.
While St Kitts and Nevis has been at the forefront, particularly with its airport solar farm, now Antigua and Barbuda has entered the fray with a major new solar plant at its VC Bird International Airport.
The country has commissioned the first phase of a 10 megawatt solar photovoltaic plant, beginning with a 3 megawatt facility at the southern border of the airport.
The facility, which is located on 9 acres of land, includes fully computerized operational and monitoring facilities.
The larger project is a joint one between Antigua’s Ministry of Tourism, Economic Development, Investment and Energy, the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA), and the UK based PV Energy.
The wider 10mw project involves a combination of grid scale and distributed installations.
