The Best Beaches in St Thomas

By Guy Britton

It’s been said that some islands have more beaches, but few have more beautiful beaches than the island of St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands.  If you are headed to St Thomas for a few hours, a few days or even weeks, some basic beach knowledge can be critical. And whether you want to get away from the crowd or join the crowd you can do both here. Knowing the difference can make a big difference.  Experienced beach lovers choose the right beach for the right reason and at the right time.  While technically all beaches in the Virgin Islands are public beaches, we’ve chosen the ones here that residents, villa guests and cunning travelers prefer.

Lindquist Beach

We went there straight away looking for Hannah and her horse (You know this beach from Hannah Davis’ DirecTV ads). We did not find either, but what we did find was the best beach in St Thomas. The new Smith Bay beach facilities and friendly helpful staff here made a big difference. With new parking areas, nice pathways, large picnic areas and one of the nicest shower and bathroom facilities we have seen anywhere in the Caribbean, this beach bowled us over.  There is ample shade adjacent to the beach — a big plus on a Caribbean beach. This place you can have to yourself if you come at the right time of day, but it’s never overcrowded. What really sets this apart is the magnificent scenery.

magens

Magens Bay

This is the most famous beach on St Thomas and what a beauty it is. It’s a long strand of impossibly white sand and sparkling clear water.  It’s also the most popular beach on St Thomas, and this place can get busy. Early morning swim, jogging or walking on this beach that is almost a mile long is a popular way to stay active on the island.

Hull Bay

Hull Bay Beach is a favorite for boaters and water sports lovers. A little further afield and harder to find, this place is far from the madding crowd. On Hull Bay, you will find a personal slice of paradise. Protected by Tropaco Point and smaller than Magen’s Bay, the water in Hull Bay is tranquil and perfect for paddle sports.  A boat ramp and moorings for fishing boats, rental of kayaks, paddle boarding and snorkeling make this beach a favorite for locals and those seeking the quieter sides of always-bustling St Thomas.

Brewer’s Bay

Adjacent to and maintained by the University of the Virgin Islands, this beach is super clean and very calm. It’s also very easy to get to, close to the capital and far from ordinary. It is a really special place and safe place used mostly by university students and locals.

Coki Beach

There is lots going on here — beach bars, water sports rentals, chair rentals, craft vendors and more. The locals are friendly, it’s safe and fun and, well, this is just a happening place. Located alongside the Coral World Ocean Park, it makes for some of the best snorkeling on the island, with gin-clear water.
