Dominica is launching a $40 million upgrade to its seismic network.

The project intends to reduce the island’s vulnerability to natural hazards – in this case, specifically, earthquakes– and the effects of climate change .

Dominica’s Minister for Justice, Immigration, and National Security, Rayburn Blackmoore, said the project was a “proactive measure by the government to manage the country’s disaster risk”

“Under the World Bank Disaster Vulnerability Reduction Project, funds have been allocated to further upgrade the seismic network on this island. The Office of Disaster Management has been mandated to draw up the terms of reference for a consultant,” Blackmoore said.
