By the Caribbean Journal staff

St Vincent and the Grenadines is moving forward with a planned geothermal energy project.

The plan is for the country’s National Geothermal Project to start up in 2018, according to Emera Caribbean Limited.

The firm is one of the companies with which the country’s government is partnering to execute the project.

According to Peter Williams, a representative of Emera, the company is on track to move to the drilling phase of the project by the second quarter of 2016.

Once the drilling is done, wells be set up and environmental analyses will be completed.

They would then be followed by work on an actual geothermal energy plant, which would ideally begin in the end of 2016.

St Vincent is the latest Caribbean country to express interest or begin work in the geothermal sector, along with Montserrat, Dominica, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia and Grenada, among others.
