The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) has launched a climate change project in the boat-building community of Windward, Carriacou in Grenada.
The government of Grenada and The Nature Conservancy have joined the UNEP in leadership of the project, “Building Capacity for Coastal Ecosystem Based Adaptation in Small Developing States,” which will train community members in reef management and protection, as well as coral nursery establishment and outplanting.
The island’s shoreline has faced rapid depletion over the past few years, with more and more homes at risk of incoming sea and storm surges.
Grenada’s Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government, Elvin Nimrod, said the project comes at an appropriate time in facing the realities of climate change as the island deals with the rapid buildup of sargassum seaweed.
With an allusion to the song “Brighten the Corner Where You Are,” Minister for Agriculture, Lands, Forestry and Fisheries Roland Bhola called for members of the community to join in playing an active role in the project.
