Are these Jamaica’s next big export?
That’s the plan for Jamaican Almonds LLC, a new venture looking to take the country’s locally-produced almonds to the global market.
Almonds are actually quite plentiful on the island, and the company says it plans to oversee the planting of new trees using “Central Almond Collectives.”
The aim on that front is to ensure that the environment is protected as much as possible, including the use of machines that can replace the manual process of almond collecting.
According to Bruce Satter, the head of Jamaican Almonds, the plan is to export a variety of products, both almonds and almond byproducts, including almond oil, almond oil extract, the whole organic nuts and even fertilizer, mulch and animal feed.
The company says it plans to launch operations this year.
“The Jamaican Almond will not be marketed as a substitute for the Californian variety, but as a much needed and well-received compliment to it,” Satter said.
