Delegations of the United States and Cuba met Tuesday at the State Department ahead of a future dialogue on human rights, according to a statement.
The purpose of the talks was to “discuss the methodology, topics, and structure” of a dialogue on human rights.
“The atmosphere of the meeting was professional, and there was broad agreement on the way forward for a future substantive dialogue, the timing and location of which will be determined through diplomatic channels,” the State Department said. “Each side raised concerns about human rights issues, and both sides expressed willingness to discuss a wide range of topics in future substantive talks.”
Human rights could prove to be a significant issue as the two sides look to normalize relations after their historic rapprochement at the end of 2014.
The talks were held in Washington.
