The Costa Rica Tourism Board has begun issuing its certification for sustainable tourism to the country’s restaurant sector.
The tourism board has issued certifications for five restaurants across the country: Restaurante Fogo, which is located in the San José area; Cañon de la Vieja; Vista del Golfo; Restaurante Lagarta; and Restaurante Jaguar, which are located throughout the Guanacaste region.
“We are making history, as we begin certifying the first restaurants in our country that are committed to making a difference in issues such as climate change, animal welfare and food waste, among others,” said Alberto Lopez, general manager for the Costa Rican Tourism Board. “We hope that this not only serves as a model for other businesses to follow, but to set our destination apart as a truly authentic culinary destination that takes the message of sustainability to heart.”
Costa Rica has already issued the certificate to 321 hotels, tour operators, car rental agencies and theme parks.
The CST programme first launched in 1997.
