There are two types of Caribbean travelers in this world: People (like me) who walk into their hotel room and immediately set the air-conditioning to tundra-like temps. And those who love nothing better than to fling open the French doors and let balmy island breezes in.
If you fall into the latter group, you’ll be interested to know about a new eco-initiative at Jamaica’s GoldenEye, where guests who forgo a/c receive a $25 per night credit on their tabs.
“I’m not a big fan of air conditioning in a rural environment because the noise drowns out the sounds of the sea, the crickets, and the tree frogs — all of which are so important to the sensory feel of Jamaica,” says the Oracabessa, St. Mary resort’s owner, Chris Blackwell.
Since rates at GoldenEye start at $620 a night, the discount is more symbolic than significant. But when it comes to eco-sensitivity, even the most modest effort add up, right? Or, as they say in Jamaica, “Every mickle make a muckle.”
