AMResorts has officially broken ground on the Secrets Cap Cana resort in the Dominican Republic.

Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina was on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony for the resort, which is expected to open in October 2016.

The $160 million project is the latest by AMResorts in the country.

It is slated to include 470 suites, eight gourmet restaurants, 300 metres of beachfront and space for meetings and weddings.

It is located near Juanillo Beach in the tony Cap Cana enclave of the greater Punta Cana area.

The hotel will be the 14th under the Secrets Resorts and Spas brand in the wider Caribbean region, and the ninth AMResorts property in the Dominican Republic.
