Afternoon Tea in Anguilla

By Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon

High tea, on one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere in the Caribbean.

Earl Grey, perhaps some chamomile, in a pristine setting at Anguilla’s Cap Juluca resort, which has hosted Paul McCartney Jay-Z and Caroline Kennedy. A place where everyone is treated like a boldfaced name.

Of course, whether you’re staying at this elegant retreat or not, you can stroll in for a cup of tea on Maundays Bay.

And we’re not talking a single lukewarm cup of Tetley here; the afternoon spread, served al fresco under the domed lobby’s signature punched-tin chandelier, includes fresh-baked scones with clotted cream and jam, as well as homemade cookies (chocolate chip and oatmeal … yum!) accompanied by assorted hot teas, iced tea, and coffee.

One must also take a moment (or three) to drink in the stunning vista of Maundays Bay, the stunning beachfront sweep on which the hotel’s signature Moorish-inspired buildings are set.

With its impossibly blue water fringed by an expanse of sand as white as spilled sugar, it’s a sublime sight which elevates the Cap Juluca afternoon tea experience from “excellent value” to “priceless.”
