The UN has “welcomed” the appointment of new interim Haitian Prime Minister Florence Guillaume, it said in a statement this week.

Guillaume had previously served as the country’s Minister of Public Health and Population; she was appointed by Haiti President Michel Martelly this past weekend.

In a statement, the UN’s Core Group, which includes the Ambassadors of Brazil, Canada, France, Spain, United States, and the European Union, as well as the Special Representative of the Organization of American States, said it “commended” Martelly’s efforts to implement recommendations by a recent Presidential Advisory Commission.

The statement also “commended” the work of political parties to to forge the necessary consensus” for the nomination of a Prime Minister and the formation of a consensus government.

The group urged all “concerned actors” to accept the measures proposed by the commission and to respect the President’s constitutional legitimacy.

“Doing so will preserve stability and create “a climate of confidence, serenity and mutual respect” in efforts to solve the political crisis and allow for the holding of inclusive and fair elections,” the group said.
