Haiti Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe is visiting Washington, DC this week.

The purpose of the Prime Minister’s visit is to urge donors to mobilize funds toward the eradication of cholera in Haiti, according to a statement from Lamothe’s office.

“We have come to defend the interests of the Haitian people, particularly those affected by cholera,” Lamothe said.

The World Bank has already agreed to a budget of $50 million for the Haitian government to address the cholera epidemic, which began shortly after the 2010 earthquake and by most accounts was brought into the country by a group of UN peacekeepers from Nepal.

Lamothe spoke about Haiti’s cholera fight in a recent interview with Caribbean Journal.
