Organization of Eastern Caribbean States Secretary General Dr Didacus Jules recently paid a visit to the island of Montserrat, vowing the organization’s “commitment to support the continued development of [the island.]”

Jules made the pledge in the context of a meeting with newly elected Montserrat Premier Donaldson Romeo.

The talks focused in part on the status of Montserrat as a British Overseas Territory and the issue of the exclusion of non-independent territories from certain benefits of the OECS.

Jules said the OECS would continue to “raise concern against this form of exclusion,” pointing to ways in which Montserrat and other similar territories “can be legitimately engaged in initiatives being undertaken by the OECS.”

Jules’ visit to Montserrat also included meetings with the island’s Governor, Opposition and other members of government.

Montserrat chose a new government, led by Romeo, in its elections last month.
