American Airlines has officially begun its first-ever service to Cap-Haitien, Haiti.

The carrier’s first daily flight touched down in Cap-Haitien on Thursday morning, with Haiti President Michel Martelly, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe and Tourism Minister Stephanie Villedrouin all in tow.

The new flight could be a boon for Haiti’s renewed tourism hopes; Cap-Haitien is close to the home of one of the Caribbean’s most famous historical sites, Haiti’s National History Park, which has been largely off the radar of travelers for decades.

The Cap -Haitien airport has been undergoing extensive renovations ahead of the new American Airlines service.
“The construction of the Cap-Haitien international airport represents a turning point in the socioeconomic reality of [Northern Haiti],” Haiti Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe said in a statement. “A new portal open to the world. A dream come true.”

Cap-Haitien becomes American’s second destination in Haiti, along with the capital, Port-au-Prince.
