Martinique and St Lucia were shaken by a 5.4-magnitude earthquake on Monday, according to data from the United States Geological Survey.

The quake occurred at around 4:09 PM local time at a depth of 15 kilometres. Its epicentre was about 81 kilometres off the coast of Le Vauclin, and about 107 kilometres east of the capital, Fort de France.

There were reports of shaking across Martinique and in St Lucia to the south, according to responses collected by the USGS.

The quake was the strongest in the region since a 5.8-magnitude quake between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico in late May.

The Caribbean is a seismically active region.
