St Vincent and the Grenadines is expecting to “soar highly in the future” in the field of information and communication technology (ICT), according to Dr Jerrol Thompson, director of special projects in the office of Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves.

Thompson was speaking following the news that the country had emerged as the winner of the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations’ “Connect the Caribbean Project.”

The country won with its Smart Project, which involves an agreement between the government and telecom provider LIME to provide Internet access for 340 households in St Vincent and the Grenadines for a monthly bill of $10.

Thompson said there were “that there are tremendous opportunities for growth in the global Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector,” and that St Vincent and the Grenadines was positioning itself to capitalize on such opportunities.

Part of that push will include the training of both teachers and students in the aspects of ICT, which is viewed as a major area of potential growth for the wider Caribbean region.
