Nevis’s government is planning to partner with United States-based company Omni-Alpha, LLC on the development of a waste-to-energy plant.
The move was announced by the Ministry of Health in the Nevis Island Administration, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Nevis Electricity Company.
The plant will consume “virtually all of the daily household and commercial waste, tires, plastics, paper, plant and vegetable material that the island of Nevis currently generates,” the NIA said.
The plan to develop a waste-to-energy plant was first announced by the government in April.
The partnership will also include the construction of a solar energy farm to support the plant and deliver about 2,250 megawatt-hours each year.
The overall investment by Baltimore-based Omni-Alpha will be around $20 million, the NIA said.
“This new partnership signals the further quantum leap forward of the island of Nevis, to become the example for the Caribbean and the world of a sustainable, green economy,” the NIA said in a release.
Construction on the plant and the solar farm will begin in the final quarter of this year, with a 12-year construction time projected.
