National Rum Day: 7 Rum Recipes to Try

Aug. 16 is National Rum Day in the US, a holiday we continue to believe should be made an international holiday. Whether you’re in the US or not, make Saturday your own Rum Day with one of these rum cocktail recipes from across the Caribbean.

The Rosa Palopo is the Casa Palopo’s hotel’s ignature drink, best enjoyed when paired with the boutique hotel’s unparalleled views of Lake Atitlan and the volcanoes across the shore.

Ingredients:
2 oz Zacapa Rum 23
5 oz fresh watermelon puree
2 oz hibiscus water (made with hibiscus extract)
1 tbsp sugar
squeeze of fresh lime juice

Method:
Mix all ingredients in a shaker and pour over ice; garnish with a slice of lime.

Hemingway Daiquiri — Papa’s Pilar Rum

This recipe comes to us from Papa’s Pilar Rum, named after Ernest Hemingway’s famous fishing boat (and supported by the Hemingway Estate).

Ingredients

1.5 oz of Papa’s Pilar Blonde Rum
.75 oz of fresh lime juice
.5 oz of fresh grapefruit juice
1 tsp of Maraschino Liquor
1 tsp of granulated sugar

Method:

Shake ingredients until ice cold and serve in a cocktail glass

Little Cottage in Negril — Appleton Estate, Jamaica

Ingredients:

1 oz Appleton Estate Reserve
.25 oz Carpano Antica Vermouth
1 oz VSOP Cognac
Angostura Bitters
Peychauds Bitters
Benedictine rinse

Garnish: Lemon/Orange Peel
Glass:Double Old Fashioned

Method:

Chill old-fashioned glass with ice. Add all ingredients, except Benedictine rinse, into a mixing glass and stir 20 times. Dump ice from old-fashioned glass and rinse the inside of the glass with Benedictine and pour out. Add a large format 2×2 cube and strain cocktail from mixing glass over cube and garnish.

 

Frozen Grapes Mojito

Ingredients:

1.5 oz white rum
4 pcs mint leaves
6 pcs fresh grapes
3/4 oz island oasis mojito mix

Method:

Blend all ingredients in a blender with ice. Pour in a high ball glass and garnish with three fresh grapes placed on a bamboo stick with a fresh lime wheel and mint sprig.

Elegant Rum Punch — Barbados

The Elegant Rum Punch comes from Barbados’ Elegant Hotels, and is the company’s signature cocktail.

Ingredients:
1.5 oz Mount Gay Eclipse
1 oz Simple Syrup
0.5 oz Lime Juice
4 oz Water
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
1 dash Ground Nutmeg
0.5oz Velvet Falernum

Method:
Mix all ingredients (except Falernum) in a Collins glass over ice. Float Falernum and finish with one dash of Angostura and garnish with a lemon wheel and cherry.

Naked Cola — Naked Turtle Rum

A different kind of Cuba Libre, you might call it a Tortuga Libre. Naked Turtle spends a great deal of time and resources supporting Sea Turtle conservation and research.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 ounces Naked Turtle Rum
3 1/2 ounces Coca Cola
Lime Slice for Garnish

Preparation:
Combine Naked Turtle Rum and Coca Cola into a highball glass over ice. Garnish with lime slice.

Aloe Rum Punch

With an ounce of aloe (Aruba’s biggest export) mixed with tropical juices and liquors, the Aloe Rum Punch at Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino puts you in an island state of mind.

Ingredients:
3/4 oz. Bacardi Rum
2 oz Aloe Juice
2 oz Pineapple Juice
2 oz Orange Juice
1 dash Grenadine Red

Method:
Mix all ingredients in a shaker and pour over ice; garnish with a slice of pineapple and a cherry.
