The Melia Nassau Beach resort in the Bahamas has begun the first phase of a $19 million renovation plan, the property announced.

The first phase is expected to be complete by November, 2014, and the resort will remain open during the redesign project.

The wider renovation project at the resort is slated for completion by early 2016, according to Melia.

The Melia property will be part of the nearby Baha Mar resort complex.

When the project is complete, the property will include 694 guestrooms and the higher-end THE LEVEL category.

Melia signed an agreement to take over operations at the resort in November 2013. It was formerly the Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort & Casino.
