Curacao experienced a 17.1 percent drop in tourist arrivals from the US in the first five months of 2014, according to data from the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

But that number was offset slightly by a significant jump in tourism from Canada.

The Dutch Caribbean island received 7,955 tourists from Canada, a 28.1 percent increase, the largest of any Caribbean tourism destination in the region in that period.

The island also saw a 5.5 percent increase in tourism from Europe, with a total of 79,710 arrivals.

For the January-May period, tourism to the island was down by 3.8 percent overall.

The island recently unveiled a new push to focus on US tourists, the results of which could begin to manifest themselves in the summer period.
