Haiti is mourning the death of former President Leslie Manigat.

Manigat, who died this week at the age of 83, was a teacher by trade who served as President of the country for just over four months in 1988

He served until he was ousted as leader in a coup d’etat on June 20, 1988. He had been elected in an often-criticized election organized by the country’s military.

In a statement, Haiti President Michel Martelly said he learned the news with “great dismay.”

He offered his condolences to his wife and family, relatives, friends and Manigat’s political supporters.

“With this death, the Republic has lost one of its worthy sons who had the heavy responsibility of occupying the highest office in the state,” Martelly said.

His wife, Mirlande, ran for president in the country’s 2010 vote.
