7 Shopping Tips in San Juan, Puerto Rico

For those in the know, the Caribbean is full of terrific shopping destinations, with San Juan, Puerto Rico right at the top of the list. To learn more about shopping in the Puerto Rican capital, CJ caught up with Dominique Haacke, who is part of the team of “Retail Therapists” at the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino and has been kind enough to share tips on how to shop your way through the city.

What does a retail therapist do?

San Juan has one of the most robust shopping scenes in the Caribbean and as a result we receive a variety of questions from guests hoping to make the most of their shopping excursions. I offer guests my personal advice on where to go, what to buy and how to navigate all of our exciting districts.

What’s your number one tip about shopping in San Juan?

Take your time! I find that most travelers forget to set enough time aside for shopping until they arrive and realize just how many shops there are in our city. Along with taking your time, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes and never hesitating to stop for a refreshing Piragua (our version of a snow cone). (Above: Olé in Old San Juan)

Are there any boutiques you particularly recommend?

I’m always finding fantastic deals at the Coach Outlet store in Old San Juan. You wouldn’t believe the prices! The list is endless, but we tend to keep our best insider spots close to the vest; it’s really those secret nooks in San Juan that we like to recommend to our guests.

What makes shopping in San Juan unique?

The old and new worlds merge in San Juan. As a result, we have just as many artisan boutiques as we do larger brand stores. You can shop for the most up-to-date fashions in hundred year old buildings while finding local handmade knickknacks on the same street.

What are some of the ways you ease the shopping experience?

We’ve curated a series of maps and lists of shops to help guests along their shopping routes, but I’m always looking for the latest trends and openings that visitors might not know about as well. I’m essentially their shopping guide down to the transportation options, where I recommend a cab ride as a finale to any shopping excursion.

Where do you like to shop in San Juan?

It’s too difficult to pick just one. My favourite locations are Old San Juan, Condado and Plaza Las Americas, which is the largest mall in the Caribbean. (Above: Condado)

Which restaurants are best for a break from shopping?

Stopping for a quick bite to refuel is highly recommended. El Toro Salao is a lovely spot in Old San Juan for tapas. Also, Caficultura is one my favourite cafes for some delicious Puerto Rican coffee. (Above: Caficultura)

Is there one souvenir you’d recommend people bring back from San Juan?

Guests can pick up a lovely serigraphy made by our local artists.  You also can’t leave Puerto Rico without bringing back a sampling of our coffee and rum.
