Jamaica’s government is moving to create a National Museum of Jamaica.
Minister of Youth and Culture Lisa Hanna said a National Museum Foundation has already been established to support the museum, which would be located in Kingston.
“I have already engaged key stakeholders, including past esteemed Prime Ministers, the Most Honourable PJ Patterson and the Most Honourable Edward Seaga, who have agreed to be patrons of our Foundation,” Hanna said.
For now, Hanna said, the Council of the Institute of Jamaica has designated the upstairs of the 16 East Street Building as the location for the museum.
“There have been many dreams and many plans over the years for a museum but nothing has happened,” Hanna said. “Finally, we have moved to develop a National Museum of Jamaica.”
There are also discussions about creating a National Museum West in Montego Bay within the Montego Bay Civic Centre.
Hanna also announced that a new Natural History Museum had opened at the IOJ on East Street in Kingston.
