St Maarten has officially been conferred associate membership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean.
St Maarten Public Health, Social Development and Labour Minister Cornelius de Weever accepted the membership on the country’s behalf.
He said the move highlighted the country’s constitutional status and its status as a hub within the region.
ECLAC is a sub-regional UN organization aimed at encouraging economic cooperation in the Latin America and Caribbean region.
De Weever was joined on the visit by Joy Arnell, Acting Secretary-General of the Ministry of Public Health Social Development and Labour, Khalilah Peters, Acting Head of the Directorate of Foreign Affairs, and Patrice Gumbs Jr, Senior Policy Advisor of the Directorate of Foreign Affairs.
