A new school in Haiti has been named for the Caribbean Community, the regional grouping said this week.
The school was developed under the Medianet Haiti Relief Fund as part of a larger housing community with 15 homes.
It will be officially known as the “CARICOM Community School of Digue Matheux,” in honour of what the organization said was CARICOM’s “solidarity with the project.”
CARICOM Assistant Secretary General Colin Granderson, representing Secretary General Irwin LaRocque, was in Haiti for the recent handing-over ceremony in Digue Matheux, which is about 40 miles from Port-au-Prince.
The Medianet Haiti Relief Fund is a partnership between Ambassador Reginald Dumas, the former special advisor on Haiti to the United Nations Secretary General, and One Caribbean Media.
MINUSTAH Chief and Trinidad native Sandra Honore was among those on hand for the opening ceremony.
