Havnana-based Cuban national airline Cubana has resumed flights between Havana and Fort-de-France, Martinique.

The service, which made its first flight last Thursday, had not been operating since 2006.

“This link between Fort-de-France and Cuba has great economic potential,” said Patrice Bensalem, director general of the Martinique Tourism Committee. “Cuba is a structured company that aspires to open itself — it is truly the moment to go.”

Martinique is looking to boost trade with Cuba, both through tourism and economic cooperation, according to a release from Martinique Regional Council President Serge Letchimy.

The two Caribbean islands will also explore ways to cooperate in the environmental sector, according to the government.

The service will operate weekly between the Havana and Fort-de-France.
