Meet the Caribbean: Christiansted, St Croix in 9 Photos

Our latest Meet the Caribbean travels to the historic city of Christiansted on the island of St Croix in the United States Virgin Islands. The onetime Danish town, which is among the more charming of its kind in the whole Caribbean, dates back almost 280 years.

Christiansted, which has a population of just under 3,000 people, is a colourful potpourri of narrow streets, brightly-hued buildings and historic nooks.

Among the town’s signature architectural features are its arches, designed to provide convenient shade on hot Caribbean mornings and afternoons.

Naturally, it’s also home to some great shopping.

Just across the harbour from downtown is the Hotel on the Cay, a small resort with its own beach.

Historic Fort Christiansvern is part of the Christiansted National Historic Site. The 18th century is a portal to the colonial history of the territory and a solemn reminder of the evils of slavery.

The top of the fort also provides a great vantage point for viewing Christiansted.

A few minutes from the Historic Site is St Croix’s famous boardwalk.

The boardwalk is home to a host of waterfront bars and restaurants, along with the Fort Christian Brew Pub, the only micro brewery in the US Virgin Islands.

See you in St Croix!
