Meet the Caribbean: Vieques, Puerto Rico in 9 Photos

Our Meet the Caribbean feature introduces you to the most photogenic place on earth: the Caribbean. We’ll be taking you through places large and small with an assortment of photos that capture the spirit and essence of a place. We begin with the beach-filled island of Vieques, Puerto Rico.

Vieques, an island of less than 10,000 people located just around 13 kilometres from the main island of Puerto Rico in the so-called “Spanish Virgin Islands.”

The island, which was home to a large and controversial US Navy testing site for decades, has now returned to its place as a sandy paradise.

You’ll almost always be able to find your own private beach on the island, like Gringo Beach (above).

One thing you’ll notice on Vieques is the sheer number of roaming horses — some even find time for a staycation at the W Vieques Retreat and Spa, the island’s largest and most luxurious hotel.

The village of Esperanza is best known for its boardwalk.

It’s also known for laid-back beach bars and pubs like the famous Bananas.

The Fuerte de Vieques dates back to the mid-19th century.

The colourful capital of Isabell II is full of bright buildings, small shops and delectable restaurants.

See you there!
