Caribbean/Mexico Hotel Pipeline Nears 25,000 New Rooms

There are nearly 25,000 new hotel rooms in the hotel development pipeline in the Caribbean and Mexico, according to new data from STR.

There were a total of 152 hotels comprising 24,487 rooms in the region through December, following the opening of 18 hotels and 3,617 rooms in the Caribbean and Mexico in 2013.

The total active pipeline includes projects in the in construction, final planning and planning stages, but not the pre-planning stage, according to STR.

There are 48 hotels and 7,974 rooms set to open in the Caribbean and Mexico this year, with the majority coming in the unaffiliated segment.

The luxury segment is expected to see the most growth this year, with 1,755 new rooms in seven hotels, followed by 1,640 rooms in 15 hotels in the upper midscale segment.
