A 5.1-magnitude earthquake caused weak-to-light shaking in Cuba and the Florida Keys on Thursday afternoon, according to a report from the United States Geological Survey.
The quake’s epicentre was about 28 kilometres north-northwest of Corralillo in Cuba, and about 172 kilometres east of Havana, at a depth of about 10 kilometres, according to the USGS.
The trembler, which struck at about 3:57 PM local time, was felt as far away as Cape Coral, Fort Myers and even Orlando in mainland Florida, according to responses collected by the USGS.
The most reports of shaking came from Havana itself, although there were not yet any reports of damage or injuries.
It was the first earthquake of that magnitude that far north in the Caribbean in some time; much of the Caribbean’s recent seismic activity has been focused in the area of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and also near Trinidad.
