As St Lucia, St Vincent and Dominica work to recover from last week’s devastating floods, their neighbours around the Caribbean are mobilizing support.

Martinique began large-scale collection efforts this weekend, gathering donations of everything from canned food to toys and water.

In Trinidad, authorities have helped gather emergency supplies for both St Vincent and St Lucia, launching a wider call for help on Sunday for more relief items.

The country’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management has appealed for a host of items, from 2,000 mattresses to 1,000 bath towels and 10 portable generators.

Trinidad is also assembling biomedical and civil engineers to provide technical assistance to the country’s Eastern Caribbean neighbours.

While work continues to bring the country’s operations back to normal, the damage has been severe.

St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves estimated the damage to the region as totaling hundreds of millions of dollars.”
