Puerto Rico is planning to resume construction of a project called the “City of Science” in Rio Piedras, according to Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla.

The project, which will be located on the site of the former Rio Piedras Correctional Complex, first launched in the late 2000s, with plans for a Comprehensive Cancer Centre Hospital.

Padilla made the announcement from the Molecular Science campus of the University of Puerto Rico this week.

The City of Science would transform the former correctional facility into a science park, with a potential investment of $1.799 billion, according to Padilla.

Because of its complexity, he said, the project would be developed over a period of 20 years.

“The most important thing is that long-term spaces will create jobs in the fields of science and technology and will make Puerto Rico a competitor in this market,” he said.
