Haiti is set to receive a $50 million grant from the Inter-American Development Bank to improve its road transport system.

The grant’s objective is to “make road transport in Haiti more efficient in order to foster economic activity,” the IDB said in a release.

The project will cover the rehabilitation and two-year maintenance of 22.7 kilometres of the Ennery-Plaisance road section in the country’s Route Nationale 1.

Hait has a road network of around 3,500 kilometres, but just about 15 percent of that amount is in good condition, the bank said.

The grant has a disbursement period of five years, according to the IDB.
