Continuing our examination of Caribbean data from the World Bank’s recent World Development Report, we now turn to population age.
What are the Caribbean’s oldest populations? What are the youngest?
To answer the question, we looked at the World Bank’s data on the percentage of Caribbean populations that are between the ages of 0 and 14 (the World Bank did not include data for all countries — Dominica, St Kitts and Nevis and several European territories were not included, for example).
So what’s the country in the Caribbean with the highest percentage of people between 0 and 14 years of age?
It’s Guyana, where 37 percent of the population is between 0 and 14. The next “youngest” was Haiti, where 35 percent of the population is between the ages of 0 and 14.
The lowest, or “oldest” in the Caribbean? Cuba, with just 17 percent. Second was Barbados at 19 percent.
The data covered the period through 2012.
