Ranking the Caribbean by Life Expectancy

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Continuing our series examining the World Bank’s data on the Caribbean, we take a look this week at data on male and female life expectancy in the Caribbean.

There are a number of countries in the Caribbean with a disproportionately high proportion of centenarians, but which countries have the highest life expectancies overall?

The answer is Cuba, which has a combined life expectancy of 77 for males and 81 for females, the highest in the region.

Individually, Puerto Rico has the highest life expectancy for women, at 83, while Cuba also has the highest life expectancy for men. The US Virgin Islands has the second-highest life expectancy for women, at 82.

The lowest combined life expectancy in the region is in Haiti, at 61 for males and 63 for females, according to the World Bank. Data was not provided for every country; those with a N/A did not have their data in the World Bank report which covered data through 2011.
