5 Great Street Foods From Trinidad

Port of Spain, Trinidad was our top Caribbean City for Food in 2013, thanks to an intoxicating blend of cultures and flavours. The true Caribbean food aficionado will be happiest on the sidewalks of downtown, sampling one of the great street food cultures anywhere. Here are five to try on your next visit (or keep trying, if you’re already there).

Doubles

It seems that almost everyone in Trinidad has his or her own “Doubles Man,” the purveyor of this curried chickpea sandwich made on a very thin fried flat bread.

Corn Soup

Yes, it’s hot in the Caribbean, and eating a hot cup of soup may not be the first thing you dream about. But this spicy, rich, delicious corn soup will make you forget the temperature.

Pholourie

They look like conch fritters at first glance — but these fritters are usually made out of chickpea flour, although the recipe can vary. Enjoy them with some mango chutney sauce and you’re good to go. (And they’ve very portable, too).

Roti

A wrap including your choice of protein (everything from goat to conch) and different blends of split peas, garlic, cumin, curry and more. Just be forewarned — eating it is a process.

Bake ‘N Shark

This fried shark sandwich is, like many popular things, somewhat controversial. But rumours persist that many Bake ‘N Sharks no longer even include shark, for those concerned. Either way, this remains one of the most popular culinary pastimes in Trinidad.
