8 Great High-Altitude Caribbean Hotels

Sun, sand and sea. They’re the party pieces of the Caribbean. It’s not often, though that you ever see “mountains” included in that group. And that’s a shame, because while much of the region is, of course, flat, there are great places to stay in the mountains across the Caribbean, from Jamaica to Dominica. Here are X great high-altitude hotels to check out.

Strawberry Hill — Jamaica

This Island Outpost property is 3,100 feet above sea level, and offers incredible views of the mountains and of Kingston.

Ladera — St Lucia

A thousand feet above the sea, Ladera has some of the best views in the Caribbean, located on the Soufriere Volcano.

Jarabacoa River Club & Resort — Dominican Republic

Set almost 1,800 feet above sea level, the Jarabacoa River Club & Resort is a cool, laid-back retreat in what’s known as the “city of eternal spring.”

Casa Grande Mountain Retreat – Puerto Rico

Located on a onetime coffee plantation, Casa Grande will make you forget you are in the Caribbean — this is no ordinary property.

Mocking Bird Hill — Jamaica

Not quite as high as the others, but this charming boutique hotel is set on a lush tropical hillside near Port Antonio.

Rainforest Inn El Yunque – Puerto Rico

If you haven’t been to El Yunque, you need to go. High in the rainforest of Puerto Rico, this is the place to get away from it all.

Secret Bay — Dominica

Set above a cliff near Portsmouth, Secret Bay is an absolute gem, with some of the best high-altitude views in the Caribbean.

Gran Jimenoa Hotel

Another great option in the Jarabacoa area, the Gran Jimenoa is set just at the base of the mountains.
