Haiti Foreign Minister Pierre-Richard Casimir’s South American tour included a visit to Suriname this week.

The visit to Paramaribo included bilateral talks with Suriname Foreign Minister Winston Lackin on issues including the recent Dominican Republic court ruling on citizenship that could impact hundreds of thousands of Dominicans of Haitian ancestry.

Suriname, like Guyana this week, issued a statement calling on the Dominican Republic to respect the “principles enshrined in the UN charter.”

Suriname is currently the President Pro Tempore of the Union of South American Nations, and the government said it would use its post to contribute to the “peaceful resolution of this problem.”

Haiti’s Foreign Ministry said it welcomed the position of the government of Suriname.
