Six Great Art Galleries in Nassau

The Bahamas is doing some fascinating things in the art world. It seems that there’s always a new gallery opening up — you can even find art exhibited in government buildings (through initiatives like the Public Treasury Art Programme). Indeed, the capital of the Bahamas is one of the Caribbean’s Best Cities For Art and has developed into a full-fledged art destination. Despite its small size, Nassau boasts a collection of high-level galleries featuring local, traditional and avant-garde works. Here are six great galleries in Nassau.

National Art Gallery of the Bahamas

The flagship of the Bahamas’ art scene, the NAGB has become one of the region’s top art galleries.

D’Aguilar Art Foundation

This charming gallery just a few steps away from the bustle of West Bay Street has a very large collection of Bahamian art, along with international works from more than 20 countries.

Popopstudios International Center for the Visual Arts

Popopstudios bills itself as a place for the “advancement of alternative Bahamian visual culture,” and it manages to do just that with an always-cutting-edge philosophy.

Hillside House

World-renowned artist Antonius Roberts helped to restore a historic building on Cumberland Street, and has turned it not into an art gallery but a cultural meeting place.

The Central Bank of the Bahamas Art Gallery

The Bahamas has developed a nice tradition of turning government buildings into homes for art exhibitions (most notably through the aforementioned Public Treasury Art Programme). And the Central Bank of the Bahamas is great, permanent example.

Liquid Courage Gallery

This relatively new space focuses on experimentation, offering the chance for untested artists to exhibit their work.
