Six Surfing Destinations in the Caribbean

It’s not the first place you think of when you think of surfing, but there are several parts of the Caribbean to bring your board — mostly on the Atlantic sides of the islands. Here are six great destinations to try and surf in the Caribbean — whether you’re a beginner or an expert.

Rincon, Puerto Rico

The surfing capital of Puerto Rico, Rincon has long been a magnet for surfing enthusiasts in the region. It’s Biarritz in Puerto Rico.

Cabarete, Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic’s bohemian enclave has been a longtime draw for surfers, with a number of hotel properties even geared towards them. Several beaches are surfable, including Playa Encuentro and the Camino del Sol on the eastern edge of Cabarete.

Port Antonio, Jamaica

Jamaica’s another Caribbean destination you wouldn’t associate with surfing, but Boston Beach in Port Antonio is a great place to try it, as is Long Bay in Portland.

Martinique

The northern coast of Martinique on the Atlantic has a number of solid surfing locations, led by “Surfers Beach,” or Anse Bonville.

Barbados

The Atlantic side of Barbados has some great swells, from De Action Beach, also known as Silver Sands Beach, to the famous “Soup Bowl.”

Tortola

Yes — surfing in the British Virgin Islands. Tortola has some great surf breaks, led by Josiah’s Bay.
