It wasn’t the victory he wanted, but it was start.

Thursday’s second-place finish at the 400M in Zurich did represent an improvement for Grenada’s Kirani James as he seeks to rebound from a disappointing seventh-place finish at the World Championships.

James finished in 44.32 on Thursday, second to America’s LaShawn Merritt, who took home gold with a time of 44.13.

The Czech Republic’s Pavel Maslak was third with a 44.91 time, while the Dominican Republic’s Luguelin Santos finished fourth with a time of 44.93 seconds.

James, the reigning Olympic champion in the 400M, is second to Merritt in the Diamond League standings this year.

A first-place finish at the league’s last meet this year could prove to be important as James continues to climb back to his status as the world’s top 400M sprinter.
