Haiti President Michel Martelly will be attending the CARIFESTA regional arts festival in Suriname this weekend.

Martelly is set to arrive Friday in Paramaribo to be on hand for the conclusion of the event, which began on Aug. 16.

This year’s fete has seen the contributions of artists and musicians from 34 countries, including CARICOM, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and a number of Asian and Latin American countries.

Martelly said Haiti’s participation in the event was “crucial,” as it is the first time Haiti has been formally involved in CARIFESTA.

Haiti’s government announced earlier this year that it would be hosting the next edition of CARIFESTA iN 2015.

CARIFESTA concludes on Sunday.
