Guatemala will help Barbados’s government with its proposal to restructure the sugar cane industry.

The support was revealed by Guatemala Foreign Minister Luis Fernando Carrera Castro during a courtesy call with Barbados Foreign Minister Maxine McClean last week.

Castro said Guatemala had been investing in the sugar industry in both Mexico and Brazil, saying Guatemala’s sugar sector “very modernized, utilizing some of the most modern technologies in the Western Hemisphere and very well organized.”

“It has tremendous investors, many of whom are leaders in the business community and we also have investments in other countries such as Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic,” the Foreign Minister said. “I think many of them would be more than happy to come to Barbados and share [their knowledge].”

Guatemala, like Barbados, is one of the world’s leading rum producers.
