The Caribbean’s remaining Gold Cup contenders failed to advance on Saturday, with Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago each losing to Latin American counterparts.
Cuba was dominated by Panama, which took the game in a 6-1 rout, led by a pair of goals from Gabriel Torres and Blas Perez. Jose Alfonso Pita scored the only goal for Cuba, which saw a red card from Ariel Martinez.
Trinidad, a surprising qualifier for the quarterfinals, suffered a tough defeat, when Mexico’s Raul Jimenez scored in the 84th minute of play.
That Trinidad kept the game scoreless for so long was something of a victory, as it lost the time of possession battle 61 percent to just 39 percent, and mustered just two shots on goal to Mexico’s 12.
