Nevis Premier Vance Amory departed the island on Saturday to attend the 29th annual CANTO telecommunications conference in Aruba.

Amory is participating in a “Ministers’ Monday” today, meeting with colleagues from islands including Aruba, Barbados, Cayman, Grenada and others.

CANTO, which is based in Trinidad and Tobago, is a trade association of Caribbean telecom firms.

This year’s conference is focusing on the theme “Towards a Smart Broadband Caribbean Community.”

Increasing broadband access has been a major issue for Caribbean governments in recent years.

The Inter-American Development Bank in particular has been partnering with CANTO to accelerated the broadband push.

In 2011, a World Bank report found that St Kitts and Nevis had the highest broadband subscription rates in the Caribbean.
