LIAT has added a security charge of $1.25 per one way trip in response to what it called “rising security demands and spiraling security costs.”
The fee will apply to all passengers, including children and infants, the company said in a statement.
“Over the past several years security costs have been climbing and LIAT has been absorbing these costs in an effort to cushion the effects on its customers,” LIAT said. “With the introduction of the security surcharge, LIAT hopes to recoup some of the additional security costs.”
The Caribbean airline said it was simply joining the “more than 100 airlines worldwide which have introduced similar charges since 2001.”
Some of the security costs come from factors like extra baggage searches and increased security around aircraft on the ground, LIAT said.
